GOLDSBORO, N.C. — As June marks Internet Safety Month, parents across North Carolina are being encouraged to take advantage of a free online webinar designed to help families better understand the risks children face while playing video games online.
The webinar, hosted by the North Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children (NCICAC) Task Force, will provide parents and caregivers with practical tools and information to help keep children safe in today’s digital gaming environment.
The session will focus on several key topics, including the dangers of communicating with strangers online, how age verification systems work and where they can fail, and ways parents can determine whether a game is appropriate for their child’s age and maturity level.
Participants will also learn how children may unintentionally share personal information through usernames, screen names, and in-game chat features. The webinar will explain the differences between public and private gaming servers and why understanding those distinctions is important for online safety.
In addition, experts will discuss parental controls, privacy settings, and strategies for setting healthy screen-time limits for children.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which works alongside the NCICAC Task Force to investigate and prevent online crimes against children, encourages parents to participate in the program and learn how to better identify potential online threats.
“Protecting children from online predators requires awareness and education,” organizers said. “This free webinar provides families with practical steps they can take immediately to help keep children safe while gaming online.”
The webinar is offered free of charge as part of Internet Safety Month initiatives aimed at educating families about online safety and digital responsibility.
Parents interested in attending can register through the NCICAC Task Force website at ICACTaskForce.org.
