GOLDSBORO, NC — UNC Health Wayne has officially launched a new Obstetric Emergency Department (OB ED), expanding access to specialized emergency care for pregnant women in Wayne County and the surrounding region.
The new service is designed for expectant mothers who are more than 16 weeks pregnant and experiencing pregnancy-related concerns or emergencies. Hospital officials say the dedicated department will provide faster access to highly trained obstetric and perinatal specialists in a clinical setting specifically tailored to the needs of mothers and babies.
Under the new process, pregnant patients arriving at the UNC Health Wayne Emergency Department who are beyond 16 weeks gestation should notify registration staff of their pregnancy during check-in. Eligible patients will then be transferred directly to the hospital’s OB Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment by a specialized care team.
Hospital leaders say the addition of the OB ED strengthens UNC Health Wayne’s ability to provide focused, high-quality care for pregnancy-related emergencies while improving the overall patient experience.
“This new service allows us to provide mothers with quicker access to specialized obstetric care during urgent situations,” said Summer Flowers, Director of Nursing Services for Labor and Delivery at UNC Health Wayne. “By connecting patients directly with our perinatal experts, we are enhancing both the patient experience and the level of care available to our community.”
The dedicated department is part of UNC Health Wayne’s ongoing efforts to expand women’s healthcare services and improve access to specialized medical care close to home.
Pregnancy-related emergencies can include a variety of concerns, including severe abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, decreased fetal movement, preterm labor symptoms, high blood pressure complications, and other urgent conditions that require immediate evaluation by obstetric professionals.
Hospital officials emphasized that pregnant women experiencing medical concerns should continue to report to the UNC Health Wayne Emergency Department for evaluation. Patients with life-threatening emergencies are urged to call 911 immediately.
The launch of the OB Emergency Department represents another investment in maternal healthcare services in Wayne County, providing expectant mothers with direct access to specialized care during some of the most critical moments of pregnancy.
