In addition to its already established elementary education residency program, WCC will now offer residency licensure certificates in special education, high school math, middle school math, high school science, and middle school science.
The new certificates will be offered beginning in the fall of 2026.
WCC’s EPP supports newly hired teachers in need of a residency license. It is designed for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field.
“Adding these licensure areas enables Wayne Community College to expand its support to more teachers through a residency program that provides coursework, mentoring, and coaching throughout the entire process, ultimately developing highly qualified educators who make a meaningful impact in today’s classrooms,” said Kelli Hamm, WCC’s EPP campus director.
The EPP offers supportive coursework; one-on-one advising, mentoring, and coaching by experienced professionals; in-person observations; step-by-step guidance through the process of receiving licensure; and partnership with the local education agency to provide the best possible experience.
Courses within the EPP are offered mostly online with a few face-to-face meetings.
Residency licensure is the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) approved alternative pathway to initial licensure.
In 2024, WCC joined the Cultivating Carolina Classrooms initiative developed by the NCDPI and the North Carolina Community College System, allowing WCC to provide a streamlined opportunity that simplifies, aligns, and accelerates the pathway to education licensure.
