ROCKY MOUNT, NC — North Carolina residents visiting driver license offices now have a new way to avoid delays and repeat trips thanks to a recently launched document upload tool from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV).
The new system allows customers to securely upload important documents directly from their smartphones while at the service counter, eliminating the need to leave the office or return later if they forget paperwork at home.
Initially developed to address one of the most common issues customers face — forgetting proof of insurance — the tool has already expanded to include a variety of other documents.
Customers can now upload insurance cards and policies, utility bills, bank statements, phone bills, leases, and other approved proof-of-residency documents while completing their transactions.
“Within the first two weeks, customers have already uploaded more than 6,000 documents using the new tool,” said NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine. “This early success shows that North Carolinians are ready for a more convenient, modern DMV experience. We’re especially proud that our frontline teams saw the potential and moved quickly to expand the tool, helping even more customers stay in line and complete their transactions without delay.”
The new service reflects the reality that many customers already keep important records stored on their mobile devices. Rather than being turned away or forced to locate a printer, customers can now securely share eligible documents on the spot.
NCDMV officials emphasized that some documents must still be presented in their original form. Federal law requires DMV employees to physically examine identity documents such as passports, Social Security cards, and birth certificates. Those items cannot be uploaded electronically.
While traditional paper copies of insurance and residency documents will continue to be accepted, the new upload option provides an added level of convenience for customers.
“This new feature is one more step in our work to reduce wait times, prevent repeat visits, and deliver better service to the people of North Carolina,” Tine said.
The document upload tool is now available at all North Carolina driver license offices statewide.
