May 20, 2026, 91, Goldsboro – Elbert Franklin Brown passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. With hearts full of both sorrow and gratitude, we celebrate the life of a beloved husband, father, proud Papa, brother, uncle and friend whose love, quick wit, and strength influenced many.
Born in Fountain, NC on November 2, 1934 to Johnnie Charlotte Smith Brown and Samuel Rufus Brown, Elbert moved to Goldsboro, NC at the age of six, becoming a lifelong resident. After graduating from Goldsboro High School in 1954, Elbert proudly served his country in the United States Army, serving tours in Japan and Thailand. As a longtime and devoted employee of the Goldsboro News Argus, Elbert served for 41 years, retiring in 1997. Marrying Linda Cain Brown in 1970, the two had a loving marriage of 50 years before Linda passed away in 2020. A member of First Presbyterian Church from the age of six, Elbert enjoyed worshipping his Lord and serving other members of the congregation. A kind, friendly, and thoughtful man, he quietly helped many. Elbert loved his extended family, his home, his cars, BBQ, going to the Mountains and his dogs. Anyone spending only a small amount of time with Elbert quickly saw his deep love and devotion to his son, Johnnie, and his grandsons, Jase and Dylan. Elbert’s expertly and beautifully manicured yard was a testament to his character. He was a collector of antiques and nostalgic memorabilia, and had the ability to find true treasures in many places. Always busy, but would stop what he was doing to be of assistance to anyone in need of help. He will be remembered for setting an example as a man of integrity, exhibiting a work ethic, which inspired family and friends, and as an individual whose heart and love for others was shown brightly in his community.
His son John Charles Brown, grandsons Jase Wyatt Brown and Dylan Tyler March (wife Kayley) and their children, Great Grandsons Nash and Nixon, as well as many nieces and nephews who loved Uncle El dearly survives Elbert. His wife Linda Cain Brown, twin brother Gilbert Wright Brown, and brother Rufus Wilson Brown, as well as sisters-in-law Betty and Gay preceded him in death.
Memorials to honor Elbert’s life should be made to First Presbyterian Church Missions, 1101 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530 or Wayne County Animal Shelter, 1600 Clingman Street, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in McChesney Hall at First Presbyterian Church followed by a service to celebrate Elbert’s life at 12:00 noon in the sanctuary with Pastor Noe Juarez presiding.
