April 29, 2026, 83, Goldsboro – SMSgt. Robert Wayne Sutton, USAF (Ret.), 83, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Wayne County on September 3, 1942, he was the son of the late Rufus and Idell Britt Sutton.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Rachel Hall Sutton; son-in-law, Michael Thornton and sisters, Katherine Allen, Ernestine Dudley, and Rhonda Parker.
Wayne is survived by his son, Jeffrey Sutton and wife, Jennifer; daughter, Melissa Thornton; and grandson, Kaden Thornton.
Wayne proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, retiring after 22 years with the rank of SMSgt. For his service during the Vietnam War, he was awarded a Bronze Star. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Wayne worked in Civil Service for an additional 20 years.
Wayne was a dedicated and faithful member of Rosewood First Baptist Church.
Wayne loved any and all sports. He could often be found cheering on his favorite team, the Carolina Tar Heels.
Family was paramount to Wayne, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Wayne’s proudest title was that of “Papa.” His grandson, Kaden was the apple of his eye and everyone around him knew that to be true.
A service to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at Rosewood First Baptist Church with Rev. Vernon Braswell, Rev. Dr. Timothy Lipp, and Rev. Kelvin Gurley officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. in the Family Life Center. Interment with full military honors will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026 at Wayne Memorial Park.
