WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — One of Wayne County’s most popular family events is back this weekend, promising a bigger and busier experience than ever before.
The annual Touch-A-Truck fundraiser, hosted in partnership with Partnership for Children of Wayne County, is set for Saturday at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, featuring more than 100 vehicles for children and families to explore.
Organizers say 105 vehicles are already registered, creating what is expected to be a jam-packed day filled with sirens, horns, and hands-on fun. Attendees can get up close with everything from emergency response vehicles to construction equipment, with kids encouraged to climb aboard and interact.
A highlight of the event will be the return of two helicopters — one from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and another from UNC Air Care. Early arrivals may catch the helicopters landing, while those who stay into the afternoon can watch them take off around 1:30 p.m.
In addition to the vehicles, the event will feature more than 30 vendors offering community resources, handmade goods, snacks, and activities. Food options include six food trucks, serving everything from deep-fried cinnamon rolls and lemonade to full meals, along with ice cream and snow cones.
Kids can also enjoy a large sand play area and rides on the popular “pickle train.” Thanks to community sponsorship, the first 200 children will receive free train rides. After that, rides will cost $1.
Organizers note the event continues to grow each year and serves as a key fundraiser, while also providing a fun and engaging experience for families across the region.
For those planning to attend, organizers ask guests to enter through the Genoa Road gate, as the main entrance will be reserved for participating vehicles. Parking is free, and admission is $5, with children ages 1 and under admitted at no cost.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a special “quiet hour” from 9 to 11 a.m. featuring no horns or sirens, making it more accessible for children with sensory sensitivities. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the full interactive experience will be in effect.
Organizers say the goal is simple: provide a fun, energetic day for families while bringing the community together.
