FERRUM, Va. — The University of Mount Olive baseball team powered its way to an 11-7 victory over Ferrum, using a trio of home runs and a decisive eighth-inning rally to secure a strong Conference Carolinas win.
Mount Olive wasted no time getting on the board, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Josh Mason sparked the offense with a double, while Malachi Gales and Rowan Watt followed with RBI hits to set the early tone.
Ferrum responded by tying the game at 2-2 in the second inning and later took a 4-3 lead in the fifth. However, the Trojans quickly answered in the sixth inning to regain control.
Rowan Watt ignited the comeback with a solo home run to even the score, shifting the momentum back in Mount Olive’s favor. Jeremiah McLemore followed with an RBI double, and Lane McLean added another RBI hit to push the Trojans ahead, 6-4.
Ferrum narrowed the gap to one run in the seventh, but Mount Olive delivered its biggest punch in the eighth inning. Lane McLean opened the frame with a solo home run, followed by an RBI from Malachi Gales. Watt then capped the explosive inning with his second home run of the day—a three-run blast that extended the Trojans’ lead to 11-5.
The five-run eighth inning, highlighted by the team’s third homer of the game, put the contest firmly out of reach.
Ferrum managed to add two runs in the ninth, but Mount Olive’s pitching staff closed out the game to seal the 11-7 victory.
The Trojans finished with 14 hits, led by Watt’s standout performance that included two home runs. McLean also homered and contributed multiple RBIs, while McLemore, Gales, and Mason each delivered key hits to fuel the offensive effort.
Mount Olive will wrap up its regular season with a doubleheader against Ferrum, scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
