WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — Students across Wayne County have a limited time left to apply for a paid summer internship program designed to build job skills and career experience.
The deadline to apply for the 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program is Friday, April 24.
Offered by Wayne County Government, the program provides six weeks of paid internships within county departments for eligible students ages 16 to 21 who live in Wayne County. Participants will work 20 hours per week, earning $15 per hour, during the program which runs from June 16 through July 24, 2026.
County officials say the initiative is aimed at preparing young people for future careers by offering hands-on experience, workplace training, and financial literacy education, along with exposure to careers in local government.
Students selected for the program will gain real-world work experience, participate in structured internships, and work flexible schedules within county departments. In addition to earning a paycheck, participants will receive training focused on professional development and essential workplace skills.
Interviews are scheduled between May 11 and May 29, followed by a mandatory orientation on June 16.
To be eligible, applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 21 and enrolled in high school or college by the start of the program. Participants must also reside in Wayne County, attend the full orientation, and not miss more than five days during the program.
Applicants will be required to complete a criminal background check, drug screening, and fingerprinting. Officials note that fingerprint-based state and national background checks are required under North Carolina law for individuals working with minors.
No program activities will be scheduled during the week of July 4.
County leaders say the Summer Youth Employment Program plays a critical role in helping young adults build confidence, develop professional skills, and prepare for long-term success in the workforce.
