April 4, 2026, 89, Goldsboro – Peggy Matthews Massengill, 89, of Goldsboro, peacefully entered into the presence of her Lord early Saturday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Wayne County on September 15, 1936, Peggy was the cherished daughter of the late Junius Guy Matthews and Millie Victoria Pace Matthews. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Massengill; her brother, Douglas Harold Matthews; and her sisters, Patricia M. McIntosh and Bonnie Suzette M. Lyerly.
Peggy lived a life rooted in faith, love, and service to others. A devoted educator, she faithfully served students and families through both Goldsboro City Schools and Wayne County Public Schools. Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom as she dedicated herself to the community as a member of the Wayne County Board of Education for three terms. During her service, she played a meaningful role in the historic merger of the city and county school systems—leaving a lasting impact on generations to come.
Her faith in Christ was the foundation of her life. For many years, Peggy worshipped with her church family at Providence United Methodist Church, where she nurtured her relationship with the Lord and shared His love with those around her. Her gentle spirit, kind heart, and unwavering compassion made her a blessing to all who knew her.
Peggy found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments. She especially delighted in watching the birds that gathered in her yard—quiet reminders, perhaps, of God’s care and creation that she treasured so deeply. She was truly beautiful inside and out, and her life was a reflection of grace, warmth, and genuine love.
Those left to cherish her memory include her devoted son and daughter-in-law, William Mark Massengill and Leigh Ann Gurley Massengill; her beloved granddaughters, Brooke Suzanne Barnes and husband, Brad, and Ashleigh Massengill Smith and husband, Jon; and her thirteen treasured great-grandchildren, who were a constant source of joy in her life. She also leaves behind many beloved nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. at The First Church in Goldsboro, followed by a service to celebrate Peggy’s beautiful life at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. A private interment will be held at a later date in Providence Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Peggy’s memory to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
Though her presence will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing she now rests in eternal peace, embraced by her Savior, and that her legacy of faith, kindness, and love will continue to bloom in the lives of all who knew her.
