MOUNT OLIVE, NC — The University of Mount Olive women’s basketball team came up short Wednesday night, falling 66-48 to Chowan in Conference Carolinas action at Kornegay Arena.
The Trojans remained competitive early, trailing just 15-11 after the first quarter. Mount Olive closed the gap to three points late in the second quarter before heading into halftime down 27-24.
Chowan took control coming out of the break, using a strong third quarter to create separation. The Hawks outscored Mount Olive 20-10 in the period, building a lead the Trojans were unable to overcome down the stretch.
Jerin Truesdale paced Mount Olive with 16 points, knocking down all eight of her free-throw attempts, while adding four rebounds and a team-high four assists. Savannah McAfee followed with 14 points, including two three-pointers, and led the team on the glass with nine rebounds. Kayla Jackson added nine points, all from beyond the arc.
Mount Olive finished with 35 rebounds and 10 assists and forced 18 Chowan turnovers. However, the Trojans were outscored 26-18 in the paint.
The Trojans will look to bounce back as Conference Carolinas play continues Saturday when they host Converse at 4 p.m. at Kornegay Arena. The game will also be recognized as Church Night.
