GRANTHAM, NC — Two structures were destroyed by fire early this morning at the Grantham Hardware Store, prompting a large multi-agency response and mutual aid from fire departments across the area.
Multiple fire departments were dispatched after reports of a working structure fire with heavy smoke showing. Several residents reported seeing smoke from miles away. Shortly after the initial tone-out, a second alarm was issued requesting additional mutual aid, and Wayne County Tanker Task Force 1 was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a three-bay brick shop and an agricultural building fully involved in flames, with nearby structures threatened. Fire crews acted quickly and were able to contain the blaze, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings and averting further damage.
The Wayne County Office of Emergency Services (OES), North Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) also responded to assist with the operation.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
