Just before 8:30 PM Wednesday, a marked Kinston Police Department cruiser was driving on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Caswell and Gordon Streets.

The police vehicle struck a pedestrian along the roadway.

Kinston Police Department Maj. Jenee Spencer addressed the media Wednesday evening and said it was unclear if the officer was responding to a call at the time.

The pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, died as a result of the collision.

The officer was treated at UNC Lenoir for his injuries.

The State Highway Patrol will be investigating the fatal accident.
