Betty Ruth Newsome Johnson, 72, passed away Monday, April 26, 2021 at Wayne UNC Health Care. Born in Wayne County on April 10, 1949, she was the daughter of the late James Newsome and Maggie Merritt Newsome.

Betty is survived by her husband of 53 years, Charles Johnson; sons, Dusty Johnson and wife, Michelle and Andy Johnson; grandchildren, Courtney Mozingo and husband, Matt and Trevor Johnson; great-grandson, Mason Mozingo; and sister, Ethelene Darden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Saunders.

Betty retired from Wayne County Public Schools after 33 years of dedicated service. During that time, she worked in the cafeteria at both Eastern Wayne High School and Eastern Wayne Elementary School.

Family was paramount to Betty and she relished in time spent with her children and grandchildren. She was an outstanding cook and enjoyed having her family around her table for a meal.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Walter Sloan officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
