Nettie Jean Beasley Kornegay

Nettie Jean Beasley Kornegay

April 1, 2021, 82, La Grange –

Nettie Jean Beasley Kornegay, 82, peacefully passed away Thursday, April 1, 2021. Nettie was born in Duplin County to the late Ned and Estelle Quinn Potter on November 27, 1938. Nettie was predeceased by her first husband and children’s father, Sanford Beasley, second husband, Walton Price and third husband, Wilbert Kornegay; also step-father John Polivka, brother Ned Potter, and sister Shirley Polivka.

Nettie grew up on the family farm surrounded by a host of extended cousins. Working side by side in the tobacco field topping and suckering or looping and grading, Nettie learned the value of hard work. Whether working in the fields or helping to run the family grill, Nettie was as dependable as they come.

Life for Nettie revolved around her kitchen. If you went looking for her, you could usually find her standing at the stove frying a chicken, making homemade gravy to go with rice, or cooking the best collards you would ever have the opportunity to eat. Her chocolate cake was like none other, and there will never be another cook to compare.

Ruling with an iron fist, Nettie was a strict but loving parent. When her feet hit the floor, you had better watch out. Her kids knew that she could be tough as nails, but her actions showed her tremendous love and care. If there was ever a need in her family, she’d move heaven and earth to make sure it was covered.

Known for her independence, it was nothing for Nettie to pack up the children and head to Wisconsin to visit her mother. She was both tough and feisty, and she didn’t need anyone to help her when she set her mind to a task.

Crocheting was a relaxing hobby for Nettie. From doilies to intricate bedspreads made with tobacco twine, Nettie could fashion some of the most beautiful items with her hands.

With a sweet tooth that couldn’t be satisfied, Nettie loved to snack on Butterfingers or vanilla cookies. A trip with Terry to get a Coke and fries would make for a perfect day in her eyes.

A service to remember Nettie’s life will be held on Monday, April 5, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Rouse Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
