Carolyn S. Smith, 81, passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Vidant Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Carolyn was born in Wayne County on November 7, 1939 to the late Allen and Mamie Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Walter Smith. Carolyn had worked as a nurse with Wayne Memorial Hospital for many years.

She was a longtime member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. She was devoted to her church and was involved in many activities where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mema, as she was known by many, will be missed.

A service celebrating Carolyn’s life will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Woods Grove P.F.W.B Church with Rev. Barry Teague officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday following the service at the church. A private interment will be in the Eastern Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery in Goldsboro.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Teresa Haithcock and husband Johnnie; brother, Grover Smith and wife Katherine; grandchildren, Emily C. Gurley and husband Michael, Brian Corbett and wife Ashley, Kyle Corbett and wife Kelli, Dustin Smith and wife Brittany, Kelsey Fields, and Hailey Fields; and great-grandchildren, Izzie Corbett, Kendall Corbett, Max Tate, Saylor Corbett, Connor Smith and was anticipating the birth of another great-granddaughter in May. She is also survived by step-grandchildren, Chad Haithcock and wife Beth and Meredith Fordham and husband Kyle; and step great-grandchildren, Kolten Gurley, Hannah Fordham, Austin Haithcock and Avery Haithcock.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Dwayne Alan Smith; great-grandson, Shawn Tate; sister, Doris Davis; and brothers, Malcolm Smith, Billy Ray Smith, Winston Smith and James Harold Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534 or to MUSC Children’s Hospital Fund, 59 Bee Street, MSC 201, Charleston, SC 29425.
