County, Schools Formalizing Agreement For Emergency Shelters

It’s more than just a verbal agreement now.  Wayne County has approved a written agreement with Wayne County Public Schools for emergency shelters.

Wayne County Emergency Management Director Aaron Stryker told the board of commissioners on Tuesday the agreement makes everything more official.

Stryker says the schools have agreed to let the county use six schools as emergency shelters during any type of disaster, primarily hurricanes.

The agreement also lays out who is responsible for feeding the shelter population and law enforcement responsibilities for security at the shelters.

Stryker also says the county is making special preparations for the 2020 hurricane season in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Wayne County Attorney is still working on final adjustments to the emergency shelter agreement before it is finalized.
