What will the next semester look like for WCPS students?
The school district and the Wayne County Board of Education are trying to get that figured out in plenty of time before the second half of the school year begins.
The school board held a special meeting on the topic Tuesday.
C.B. Aycock Principal John Bell talked about the challenges for staff, but says they want to see students in the classroom more if it can be done safely.
Eastern Wayne High School Principal Lee Johnson says, without regular face-to-face instruction, the current semester has “been a wash” for an average of ten students per EWHS teacher.
School Board member Jennifer Strickland says her family knows firsthand about the difficulties with remote learning, noting that her kids have struggled in some subjects without face-to-face instruction.
Board of education chair Chris West urged parents to complete the Registration Contract to inform the district of their second semester preferences.
While Tuesday’s meeting was only for discussion purposes, Wayne County Public Schools administration will be looking at what would be possible to allow for more in-person learning next semester.
