What characteristics does the community want in the next superintendent for Wayne County Public Schools?
Jim O’Rourke from the North Carolina School Board Association had some answers for the Wayne County Board of Education this week as he showed off the results from WCPS’s survey regarding the vacant superintendent position.
When asked about the five most important traits staff and the community want the superintendent to exhibit, the answers include:
- Commitment to high student achievement
- Values employees
- Integrity
- Commitment to the community
- Proactive
O’Rourke says many residents took part, with over 400 participants in each category.
The surveys went out to the Wayne County community in late August as the district started searching for a new superintendent.

WCPS Superintendent Dr. Michael Dunsmore officially resigned at the end of June following the disclosure of a nearly $5 million deficit in the district’s fund balance.
Dr. James Merrill has been serving as the interim superintendent while WCPS seeks its new permanent leader.
