October 20, 2026, 65, – Alan Robert Whitehead, 65, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at UNC Wayne Healthcare in Goldsboro. Born in England on August 3, 1961, Alan was the son of the late Wayne and Sheila Whitehead. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dianna Whitehead.
Alan proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard. Following his military service, he earned his master’s degree in education from Liberty University and devoted 18 years to teaching exceptional children with Wayne County Public Schools before retiring. His love for children extended far beyond the classroom, as he found great joy in encouraging, supporting, and making a difference in their lives.
Alan was a member of Pleasant Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church and the Moose Lodge in Rocky Mount. He also enjoyed participating in the Saint-Gobain Bowling League and was involved with Vision Community Theatre and the Arts Council of Wayne County. These activities reflected his love for fellowship, creativity, and spending time with others.
A fun-loving man with a big personality, Alan had a special love for music and performing. He especially enjoyed singing karaoke, often choosing songs by Louis Armstrong and Elvis Presley. He loved getting into character, dressing the part, and bringing each performance to life. Whether sharing his musical talents, enjoying the arts, or simply spending time with friends, Alan had a way of bringing joy to those around him. When he wasn’t entertaining others, he could often be found cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys.
Above all, Alan treasured his family and the relationships he built throughout his life. His caring heart, playful spirit, and passion for helping children will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Alan leaves behind his loving wife, Loretta Lynn Johnston Whitehead; his children, Tony Pascall, Josie Pines, and Casey Scarboro; his sisters, Susan Whitehead McGuire (Troy) and Sharon Whitehead Young (Julie); his brother-in-law, Brian Johnston; dear friends, Tony and Joyce Stroud and Alan Overton; and his beloved cat, Leela. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 26, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Pleasant Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church. A service to celebrate Alan’s life will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, with Pastor Barry Stallings officiating. The service will conclude with military honors rendered by the United States Coast Guard in recognition of Alan’s faithful service to his country.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Alan’s memory by performing a kind deed for a child. Through this simple act of kindness, his love for children and the lasting difference he made in their lives can continue to live on.
