October 18, 2026, 84, Dudley – Marlene Sue Duke Short, 84, of Dudley, passed away peacefully in the late hours of Sunday, October 18, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Though her time here has come to an end, the love she gave, the memories she created, and the lives she touched will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Marlene was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, and a dear friend to many. Family was at the heart of her life, and the love she shared with those closest to her was a gift that will continue to live on through generations. She found joy in traveling, tending to her garden, and making memories with the people who meant the most to her.
Her love for others extended far beyond her family. Marlene dedicated many years of service to her community through numerous local and national positions with the Post 11 American Legion Auxiliary. She also proudly served alongside her beloved husband in the American Legion Youth Baseball program. Through her commitment and willingness to serve, she made a lasting difference in the lives of others and demonstrated the true meaning of dedication, compassion, and community.
Marlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Kenneth Lee Short, and her cherished grandson, Joshua Dean Short. Though their absence left a space in her heart, the love they shared remains an enduring part of her story.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving sons, Timothy Short and Ferlin Short (Angela); her daughter, Elizabeth Smith and husband Michael; her brother, Jack Leon Cowgar and wife Patricia; and her companion of 22 years, Milo Edwards. She also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many dear nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry her memory forward with love.
Marlene’s life was one of love, family, friendship, and service. She leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in years alone, but in the countless moments shared, the kindness she offered, and the love she gave so freely. While her family and friends will deeply feel her absence, they can find comfort in knowing that a life so full of love is never truly gone. She will continue to live on in the stories told, the memories treasured, and the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
A memorial service with visitation will be held at a future date. Please continue to check back for additional information.
