September 27, 2026, 84, – Sandra Hurt “Sandy” Scott, 84, passed away peacefully Sunday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by the love of her family. Sandy was born in Washington, D.C., on September 14, 1942, to the late James and Ruby Hurt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lisa Hurt.
For nearly four decades, Sandy devoted her life to educating, encouraging, and caring for the children of Wayne County. During her 38 years of service with Wayne County Schools, she served as a principal at both Rosewood and Grantham Schools. To Sandy, education was far more than a profession—it was an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young people and the families who entrusted them to her care.
Generations of students, parents, teachers, and staff came to know Sandy not simply as a principal, but as a steady and caring presence in their lives. She had a remarkable ability to lead with both strength and compassion, earning the respect of those who worked alongside her and the affection of the communities she served. Long after students left the hallways of her schools, many still remembered Mrs. Scott and the way she made them feel valued and cared for. Her influence extended well beyond the classroom and school office, leaving an enduring mark on the Wayne County community she faithfully served for so many years.
As meaningful as her career was, Sandy’s greatest love was found within her family. She shared 62 years of marriage with her husband, Alvin Martel Scott, Jr., building a life together filled with devotion, family, and treasured memories. She was proud of her sons and found special joy in being a grandmother.
Sandy is survived by her beloved husband, Alvin Martel Scott, Jr.; sons, Alvin Martel Scott, III and Sean Patrick Scott and wife, Pamela; two grandchildren; brother, David Hurt; sister, Delores Hurt; and many extended family members, former students, colleagues, and friends whose lives were made better by knowing her.
A private graveside service for the family will be held at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
For 38 years, Sandy helped shape young minds, strengthen schools, and build a better community. Her titles included educator and principal, but her true legacy will be found in the countless lives she touched along the way. Her family and community will remember her with gratitude, affection, and the knowledge that a life spent serving others is a life that continues to make a difference long after the final school bell has rung.
