September 23, 2026, 91, Mount Olive – In the early morning hours on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as a new day was about to dawn, Annie Frances Sloan Kornegay went to her eternal rest. She was at the home of a daughter and son-in-law when her earthly life came to completion.
Mrs. Kornegay, 91, was a long-time resident of Mount Olive. Her working career had included several places of employment to include Burlington Industries, Mount Olive Sportswear, Cato’s, Belk-Tyler’s, and lastly, Alphin Insurance where she was the “copy lady.” In earlier years she had been a member of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church. Annie Frances was known for her love of Hershey Kisses, Western television programs, and her companionship with several furry friends, both cats and dogs.
She leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law, Johnny Daniel “Danny” and Jo Kornegay of Princeton; a daughter and two sons-in-law, Pamela “Pam” Kornegay Best and John Best, of Mount Olive, and Walter F. “Buz” St. Cyre II of Grantham, husband of her late daughter, Patricia “Pat” Kornegay St. Cyre; three grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Jenna Best of Pikeville, Kelly Best of Liberty, and Blake and Megan Kornegay of Grantham; seven great-grandchildren, Chesney Davis and husband, Adam, of Pikeville, Sean Sasser of Liberty, Tyler Best of Goldsboro, Elijah Best of Pikeville, Bryson Minnich of Liberty, and Kendall Kornegay and Kelsey Kornegay, both of Grantham; two great-great-grandchildren, Ansley Davis and Adalynn Best; and several cousins.
Mrs. Kornegay was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ray Kornegay; one of their twin daughters, Pat; a great-grandson, John Patrick Best; her father, John Bryant Sloan; her mother, Hazel Odom Sloan Brown; and her step-father, “Mr. John” Brown. Also dear to her heart were her maternal grandparents, Walter F. and Fannie H. Odom; and her mother’s siblings, James Odom, Tempie Odom, Ray Odom, and Norwood Odom. For many years she was the only grandchild among them, and the younger of the siblings regarded Annie Frances as a younger sister rather than a niece.
Per the wishes of Annie Frances, a simple graveside service will be held Saturday, September 26, at 11:00 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive. Officiating will be the Rev. Rudolph West. Visitation with the family will be at the cemetery after the service, and at other times at the Kornegay residence in Mount Olive. Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be made to a local animal shelter or humane society, or to the charity of one’s choice.
The Kornegay family are most grateful for the exemplary assistance provided by the home care team of Gentiva Hospice, and they offer special recognition to Nikki Wolfe and Jordan Huffman who became honorary granddaughters to Mrs. Kornegay through their love and compassionate care.
