September 23, 2026, 82, – Ann Thornton Cox, 82, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Wayne County on March 11, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Lee Thornton and Rubia Keel Thornton.
In addition to her parents, Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Sammy Roland Cox and sisters, Dora Lee King, Dolly Smith, and Mary Ellen Best.
Ann is survived by her daughter, Tammy Millard (Dan); son, Sam Cox (Kim); grandchildren, Trey Millard (Hannah), Carlee Crawford (Josh), Cade Cox (Blayke), and Kyler Cox; great-grandchildren, Asher Crawford, Graylee Crawford, Gavin Millard, and Heidi Millard whose birth she was looking forward to in the coming weeks; sisters, Betty Jane Williams, Faye McCullen (M.F.), and Billie Turlington (Jackie); brothers; Kenneth Thornton (Dianne), Keith Thornton (Denise); and Gene Thornton; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Ann’s life was one marked by devotion—to her family, her students, and the people she loved so dearly. For 34 years, she poured her heart into teaching at Wayne Montessori School. More than simply a profession, teaching was a calling for Ann. She cared deeply for her students and took great pride in watching them learn, grow, and discover the world around them. Through the years, she touched countless young lives with her patience, encouragement, and genuine love for children.
Outside the classroom, Ann found happiness in the simple things that made life meaningful. She loved the beach, and some of her happiest days were spent near the water. She especially treasured the years she was able to call Surf City home, enjoying the beauty and peacefulness of coastal living.
Above all else, Ann loved her family. Family gatherings were especially dear to her, and she cherished time spent with her siblings, cousins, and their families. Whether it was a special occasion or simply an opportunity to be together, Ann valued the laughter, stories, and memories that came from being surrounded by those she loved.
Of all the titles Ann held throughout her life, some of her most treasured were those given to her by her family. She delighted in being “Grandma” and “Mema” to her grandchildren and embraced an even sweeter chapter when she became “AnnMa” to her great-grandchildren. Each one held a special place in her heart, and the love she had for them was immeasurable.
For many years, when her health allowed, she attended Pike’s Crossroads Church with her daughter and son-in-law. She treasured those times of worship and fellowship.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Seymour Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a service will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Millard Jr. and Rev. Dan Millard III “Trey” officiating. Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at Wayne Memorial Park.
