MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The University of Mount Olive men’s soccer team suffered a 5-1 loss to nationally ranked No. 8 Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.
The Bobcats, ranked eighth nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II poll, entered the contest unbeaten and used a strong offensive performance to secure the Conference Carolinas victory.
Lees-McRae opened the scoring in the 14th minute, but Mount Olive responded just 1:18 later when Haythem Abraham found the back of the net in the 15th minute. Abraham’s second goal of the season evened the match at 1-1.
The Bobcats quickly regained control in the 20th minute when Conor O’Gorman scored his second goal of the afternoon. Less than a minute later, Lees-McRae added another goal to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Lees-McRae continued its offensive attack in the second half, with Andrea Marrazzo scoring in the 58th minute and Owen Smith adding the final goal in the 70th minute to seal the 5-1 victory.
Mount Olive goalkeeper Nick Cutlip recorded seven saves, while Lees-McRae goalkeeper Jonathan Kienle finished with four.
The Trojans registered eight shots, including five on goal, while the Bobcats finished with 15 shots, 12 of which were on target. Both teams recorded five corner kicks.
With the loss, Mount Olive falls to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Lees-McRae improves to 5-0-2 overall and 2-0-2 in conference action.
The Trojans will look to bounce back when they travel to Murfreesboro to face Chowan on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
