GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne Preparatory Academy has announced that all three of its divisions — elementary, middle and high school — have been designated as Unified Champion Schools through Special Olympics North Carolina.
The designation recognizes the school’s efforts to create an environment where students with and without disabilities are included, respected and provided opportunities to participate throughout the school community.
Unified Champion Schools are designed to promote social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities through activities that encourage acceptance, understanding and respect.
For Wayne Preparatory Academy, school officials said the designation reflects a broader commitment to ensuring all scholars have a place to belong, whether in the classroom, athletics, extracurricular activities or other areas of school life.
As WPA continues implementing the Unified Champion School program, staff members will receive additional resources and training through professional learning communities and staff meetings. School officials said many of those resources will also complement WPA’s ongoing Leader in Me initiatives.
The school said becoming a Unified Champion School represents another step in its effort to help every scholar discover their strengths, develop leadership skills and understand that they are a valued member of the school community.
Wayne Preparatory Academy emphasized that inclusion and leadership opportunities should extend to every student, regardless of ability.
The Unified Champion Schools program is an initiative of Special Olympics that works with schools to promote meaningful social inclusion by creating opportunities for students of all abilities to learn, participate and lead together.
