September 8, 2026, 85, Goldsboro – Betty Merritt Limbaugh, 85, of Goldsboro, went home to be with Jesus on September 8th, 2026. She passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on March 15th, 1941, in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Sudie McCandless Merritt and James Alton Merritt, Sr. Betty worked at Borden Manufacturing for 33 years, where she was the vice president of shipping.
Betty married James Limbaugh in 1959, and they shared 47 incredible years together. She served her country as a military spouse for 21 years. Betty loved to shop, was always able to find a good deal, and her favorite store was Belk. She was very protective of her belongings, especially her jewelry. She enjoyed going out to lunch with her family. Betty and Jim were regulars at The Lantern Inn in Goldsboro. She enjoyed watching her soap operas, especially The Young and the Restless. She enjoyed going to church when she was able. She was a kindhearted, loving person with a heart of gold. She was a true lady. More than anything, she loved her family. She was a dedicated wife, mother, Granny, and GiGi.
Left to cherish Betty’s memory are her beloved children: her daughter, Lib Garner; her son, Jimmy Limbaugh; and her son, Michael Limbaugh and his wife, Betty Jean; her cherished grandchildren: her grandson, Derek Limbaugh and his wife, Caroline; and her granddaughter, Kristin Kissane and her husband, Sean; her three beautiful great-grandchildren: her grandsons, David and Samuel Limbaugh, and Daniel Kissane; her brother, Buddy Merritt and his wife, LuJene; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Limbaugh; her parents; brother, Tom McCandless; and son-in-law, J.E. Garner.
The family would like to thank Gentiva for their services during her last days. All the nurses, doctors, and aides were a light during this dark time. The family would also like to thank The Lantern Inn for their love and kindness throughout the years, where she was fondly known as “Mrs. Betty.” They would also like to thank Southeast Family Pharmacy for their exceptional service and love during this time.
Visitation will be held at Seymour Funeral Home from 6–8 p.m. on Friday, September 11th, 2026. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 12th, 2026, at Pikeville Cemetery with the Reverend Barry Stallings and Derek Limbaugh officiating. At other times, the family will receive visitors at Betty’s home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Pleasant Grove Church and Bethel Church.
