Matthews Named Second Vice President of NCBEMO Board of Directors

Goldsboro, N.C. — Goldsboro City Councilmember Brandi Matthews has been named Second Vice President of the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Black Elected Municipal Officials (NCBEMO). Matthews was officially sworn in on July 26, 2026, during NCBEMO’s annual Summer Conference, held in Wilmington.

“My involvement with NCBEMO has reminded me of the power of representation, connection and being surrounded by people who understand both the privilege and the weight of public service,” Matthews said. “In these kinds of spaces, we are not asked to shrink. We do not have to explain, nor do we have to prove that we belong. We are empowered to lead boldly. I am deeply honored to serve as Second Vice President and to continue helping build an organization where Black Elected Officials across North Carolina can find community, mentorship, advocacy and a safe place to simply be. When people feel seen and supported, it helps them feel secure in who they are. They lead differently and the communities we serve are better because of it.”

As the newly elected Second Vice President, Matthews joins Black elected municipal officials from across the state on the Board of Directors.

• Bryan Haynes, Fuquay-Varina Commissioner – First Vice President
• Chakema Clinton-Quintana, Wilmington Council Member – Director (2026-2028 term)
• Doris Wallace, Smithfield Council Member – Director (2026-2028 term)
• Dr. Erin Banks, Harrisburg Mayor Pro Tem – Director (2026-2027 term)

The North Carolina Black Elected Municipal Officials has taken the lead in supporting public service as a way to implement change for citizens of North Carolina. NCBEMO strives to achieve political and community transformation through training, education, collaboration, advocacy and outreach programs that promote the mission of the organization. NCBEMO is a nonpartisan, nonprofit statewide organization of current black elected officials and supporters of the organization.
