September 2, 2026, 35- Joshua Vernon Magnus, 35, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Josh was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on September 9, 1990, to Tyrone Vernon Magnus and Debra Susan Brown Magnus.
Josh was a devoted husband, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. Family meant the world to him, and some of his most treasured moments were those spent with the people he loved, especially his big brother, David. He was deeply proud of his parents and admired the strength, character, and example of his father. Throughout his life, Josh worked hard to follow in his father’s footsteps and to become a man his family could be proud of.
That desire to serve was woven throughout Josh’s life. He proudly served his country for seven years in the United States Air Force, following a path of dedication and service that meant so much to him and his family. His military service was a source of great pride, and he carried the values of commitment, discipline, and helping others into every area of his life.
Josh was a graduate of Wayne Christian School, Class of 2009. He later earned an Associate Degree from Wayne Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree from Walden University. At the time of his passing, he was pursuing enrollment in a master’s degree program in psychology, continuing his lifelong desire to learn, grow, and help others.
A gifted and determined individual, Josh was largely self-taught and had an extraordinary ability to learn and excel at whatever captured his interest. He owned and operated his own lawn care business, Blades of Zen, and also served as maintenance director for the family business, Bright Beginnings. Through his work, he found many opportunities to serve, encourage, and make a difference in the lives of others.
Josh was also an exceptionally athletic young man. During his years at Wayne Christian School, he was recognized as one of the fastest runners in cross-country in Wayne County. During his years in the Air Force, he excelled in physical fitness and took great pride in maintaining himself at a high level of fitness. His strength and discipline eventually led him to earn a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Yet, for all of his accomplishments, Josh was a humble man. He did not seek recognition for himself. Instead, he found joy in helping others succeed. He was intelligent, creative, curious, and compassionate, and he genuinely wanted to make the world around him better.
Josh loved the ocean and cherished his time surfing. One of the things that brought him particular joy was sharing that love with his nephews and helping them learn to surf. He also taught himself to speak several different languages, always embracing new challenges and opportunities to learn.
Josh had a natural desire to teach and encourage others. He became an influencer in his own unique way, creating videos designed to help people learn new skills, improve themselves, and become better at whatever they were trying to accomplish. He believed that every person had the ability to make a difference and that our lives are most meaningful when we use what we have been given to help someone else.
His creativity extended into music and writing. Josh taught himself to play several musical instruments and became an accomplished musician and songwriter, writing many songs throughout his life. He was also a gifted writer and had several children’s books and self-help books published. His love of art was evident in many forms, and he continually looked for ways to share his appreciation for creativity and beauty with others.
Above all, Josh had a heart for people. His Christian faith was an important part of his life, and he desired not to seek a platform or personal recognition, but simply to reach one person at a time with the love of Jesus. His heart for service led him to serve as a youth pastor and to minister to those experiencing homelessness and people he encountered on the streets.
One of his special ministry efforts was the Christ Cruise at Carolina Beach, where he would invite people out on Mr. Tony’s boat and share fellowship, encouragement, and the love of Jesus. For Josh, ministry was not simply something done inside a church. It was about meeting people where they were and reminding them that they were seen, valued, and loved.
Josh leaves behind a legacy not defined by any single moment, but by a lifetime of service, creativity, faith, determination, and love. He served his country, served his community, served his church, and most importantly, loved his family deeply. Those who knew Josh will remember his intelligence, his humility, his many talents, his adventurous spirit, his willingness to teach, and the countless ways he tried to make a difference in the lives of others.
He is survived by the love of his life, Beth Massey Magnus; his parents, Ty and Debra Magnus; his brother, David Magnus, and his wife, Brooke, and their children, Tyler, Elliott, Ashton, and Riley; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Sheila and Kenneth Massey; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Tina and C.J. Tynch, and their children, Lizzy, James, Virginia and Austin; his grandmothers, Wanda Brown and Eleanor Magnus; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory.
A service to celebrate Josh’s life will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, followed by military honors on the front lawn. The family will greet friends and family following the service at American Legion Post 11, 2973 U.S. Hwy. 117 South, Dudley, NC 28333.
