DUDLEY, N.C. — Moving the game up a night didn’t allow Southern Wayne to completely escape the weather, but the Saints didn’t let the rain stop them from earning their first victory of the season.
Southern Wayne’s game against Union was moved to Thursday night because of the threat of inclement weather, but the teams still found themselves playing through rainy conditions. Some spectators at the game also reported seeing lightning strike nearby.
On the field, the Saints were looking to rebound following a difficult loss to James Kenan in their previous game.
Southern Wayne did just that.
The Saints defeated the Union Spartans 26-14, bouncing back from their season-opening loss and improving their record to 1-1.
The victory provided Southern Wayne with some early-season momentum as the Saints now prepare for a Wayne County matchup.
Southern Wayne will return home to face the Goldsboro Cougars at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.
