July 26, 2026, 78, Goldsboro – James Clayton Corbett, 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Wayne County on May 23, 1948, Clayton was the son of the late Dick and Pearline Corbett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Taylor Morgan Corbett; his siblings, Donald Corbett, Lola Mae Capps, Angeline Burroughs, Marie Colie, Margie Witt, Sylvia “Sibbie” Sasser, and Kathy Burroughs; and his brother-in-law, Jarmon Eason.
A hardworking man with a strong sense of responsibility, Clayton spent his career providing for his family. He worked as a lineman with Stackhouse before retiring from Firestone in Wilson. Retirement didn’t slow him down. He later worked alongside family with Corbett Demolition in Goldsboro, always willing to lend a hand and never afraid of an honest day’s work. His work ethic was a reflection of the values by which he lived—faithfulness, determination, and a willingness to do every task to the best of his ability.
Clayton was a faithful member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, where he found great joy in worshiping the Lord alongside his family and church family. His faith remained an important part of his life and was evident in the way he loved and served others.
The farm was where Clayton felt most at home. Whether tending to his horses, cows, and goats, working the land, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of country life, he found contentment in caring for the things he loved. He also shared a special bond with his beloved pets, Spanky, Paws, and Leo, who brought him much companionship through the years. When the work was done, he could often be found relaxing while watching a good old western movie or cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers.
Perhaps what people will remember most about Clayton was his genuine love for others. He never met a stranger, and before long he could usually discover how you were related or find someone you both knew. If there wasn’t already a connection, Clayton would make one through his warm smile, kind conversation, and sincere interest in people. His gift for making everyone feel welcome left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Above all else, Clayton cherished his family. Whether spending time together, sharing stories, or simply enjoying everyday moments, nothing brought him greater happiness than being surrounded by those he loved. His steady presence, generous heart, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever treasured.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. A service to celebrate Clayton’s life will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with Rev. Barry Teague officiating. Interment will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Fairview Cemetery, La Grange.
Clayton is survived by his loving wife, Betsy Holloman Corbett; his children, Cindy Corbett (Ray), Richard Corbett (Myra), Gretchen Pelletier (Todd), and Justin Jackson (Nayeli); his grandchildren, Whitney McGowan (Ethan), Alex Hinson (Lauren), Ana Parks (Bailey), and Alexander Jackson; his great-grandchildren, Madison McGowan, Elijah McGowan, Colten Jones, Goldie Roberson, and Aria Parks; his sisters, Nancy Scott and Jeanie Kunze (Robert); his brothers, Joe Corbett (Sina) and Nick Burroughs (Kim); his sister-in-law, Gail Eason; many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly; and two dear friends, George and Marianne West.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Clayton’s memory to Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, 4009 Central Heights Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
