July 7, 2026, 84, Goldsboro – Ann Mewborn Smith, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Ann was born in Wayne County on December 18, 1941, to the late Carl Warren Mewborn and Rosa Lee Darden Mewborn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elton Lee Smith, Sr.; her son, Kenneth Stephen Smith; and her brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Gaynell Mewborn.
For 31 years, Ann faithfully served as an educator with Wayne County Public Schools, where she touched the lives of countless students through her dedication and compassion. She was also a member of Hood Swamp Friends Church, where her faith remained an important part of her life.
Alongside her husband, Ann helped own and operate the family’s produce business, Stomp Johnson Produce Market, while working on their family farm in the Hood Swamp community for many years. She embraced the farming life with a strong work ethic and took great pride in caring for her family and home.
Ann found joy in the simple blessings of life. She especially loved the Christmas season, a time she cherished with family. Ann loved to cook and was known for her excellent culinary skills. She always made sure her boys were well-fed while working on the farm. Ann’s most cherished role was being “Mema” to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her gentle spirit, kind heart, and unwavering love for her family will be treasured by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Ann’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Barry Teague and her grandson, Jonathan Smith, officiating. Interment will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.
Ann is survived by her sons, Elton Lee Smith, Jr. and wife, Judy, and Michael Smith and wife, Patricia; her grandchildren, Jonathan Smith and wife, Maggie, Hannah Smith Patterson and husband, Andrew, Morgan Smith Stafford and husband, Blaine, Stephanie Smith Winstead and husband, Shane, and Zachary Smith; and her seven cherished great-grandchildren, Nora, Asher, Lennon, Riley, Smith, Charlotte, and Stevie.
