GOLDSBORO, N.C. — What began with a single small black cooking pot and an overwhelming rush of hungry customers has grown into one of the area’s most beloved family traditions.
On July 4, 1986, Mr. and Mrs. Grady opened the doors to Grady’s BBQ for the very first time, unsure of what the future would bring. That uncertainty quickly turned into an unforgettable first day in business.
“Started that first day with a little black pot about twelve inches…and we couldn’t keep up,” the family recalled. “We opened at ten o’clock and by 12:00 we had sold the whole hog out and most of it went out without bread and a lot of it without slaw!”
Now, 40 years later, the restaurant is celebrating four decades of serving customers from across North Carolina and beyond while reflecting on the relationships that have made the milestone possible.
In a message shared with customers, the Grady family expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received over the years.
“We’ve been blessed to welcome folks from near and far, and we’re grateful that so many of you have made us part of your family traditions,” the family said.
The anniversary also carries special meaning as it marks the first without Mr. Grady, whose vision, dedication and hard work helped establish the restaurant’s reputation for authentic Eastern North Carolina barbecue and warm hospitality.
“There’s no way to celebrate 40 years without thinking about him,” the family shared. “He is deeply missed, and we’re thankful for the foundation he helped build and for the opportunity to carry it forward every day.”
The family also recognized the many employees who became like family, loyal customers who became lifelong friends, and everyone who has walked through the restaurant’s doors over the past four decades.
“From the moment you came in, we always hoped you’d feel right at home,” the family said.
As Grady’s BBQ marks its 40th anniversary this Independence Day, the family is inviting the community to celebrate the milestone and reflect on the memories made around its tables over the past four decades.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for allowing us to serve you for the past 40 years,” the family said. “We hope you’ll help celebrate this milestone with us.”
