PIKEVILLE, NC — Dee’s Memorial Park was filled with patriotic spirit and hometown pride Saturday evening as residents and visitors gathered for Freedom Fireworks 2026, a celebration honoring Pikeville’s 135th anniversary and America’s upcoming 250th birthday.
The community event brought families together for an evening of history, fellowship and entertainment, culminating with a fireworks display that lit up the Wayne County sky.
One of the evening’s featured attractions was the Pikeville Memory Walk, which gave attendees an opportunity to explore the town’s rich history through exhibits highlighting the people, businesses and milestones that have shaped Pikeville since its incorporation in 1891.
Visitors learned about Pikeville’s beginnings as a railroad town, its deep agricultural roots and the generations of families whose dedication helped the community grow into what is affectionately known as “The Gem of Wayne County.”
The Memory Walk also showcased many of Pikeville’s historic landmarks and businesses, including Crawford Furniture, Pikeville Insurance and Collier Motors, recognized as the last AMC dealership in America. Exhibits also highlighted the famous Pikeville Horse Sales at Doby Howell’s, the service and sacrifice of local military veterans and hometown heroes, and other moments that have left a lasting mark on the community.
Throughout the evening, families enjoyed spending time together as neighbors celebrated both Pikeville’s proud past and its promising future. Organizers said the event was designed not only to commemorate the town’s 135-year history but also to recognize the values, traditions and community spirit that continue to define Pikeville.
As darkness fell, attendees gathered for the evening’s grand finale as fireworks illuminated the sky above Dee’s Memorial Park, drawing cheers from the crowd and providing a fitting conclusion to the celebration.
With America preparing to celebrate its 250th birthday next year, Freedom Fireworks 2026 served as a reminder of the shared history, patriotism and community pride that continue to unite Pikeville residents.
