FREMONT, NC— A powerful storm that moved through the Pikeville and Fremont areas Saturday afternoon left behind significant damage, toppling several large trees and damaging a former school building near downtown Fremont.
According to reports from the area, the storm’s most concentrated damage occurred within a three- to four-block area surrounding the old school building. Multiple large trees were uprooted or snapped by the strong winds, with at least one tree falling onto the roof of the former school.
Residents who witnessed the storm described the winds as intense and unusual. Several said they believed they saw what appeared to be a tornado that may not have fully touched the ground before moving through the area.
