WAYNE COUNTY, NC — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a body believed to be that of a missing Wayne County man was discovered in a wooded area earlier this week.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a missing person report for Robert William Shook on June 19, 2026. Family members reported that Shook was last seen on June 16.
The Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit launched an investigation into Shook’s disappearance. On June 23, a resident in the Shadywood Drive neighborhood discovered the body of a deceased male at the edge of the woods on his property and contacted authorities.
Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to the scene and, based on identifying clothing, jewelry, and other personal items, investigators believe the body is that of Robert William Shook.
The body has been transported to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office, where officials will conduct further identification and determine the cause and manner of death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
