The Duke Energy Foundation awarded WCC a $10,000 Workforce Development Grant to support the program’s implementation.
Students in the academy learn basic wiring, safety practices, and proper tool usage. They will receive a stipend and tool kit upon completion of the program.
“The Duke Energy grant will allow Wayne Community College to continue offering the Careers Electric Summer Academy and expand opportunities for local high school students to explore careers in the electrical and energy sectors,” said WCC Vice President of Academic and Student Services Kristie Sauls.
“Through this partnership, students gain valuable exposure to industry careers, hands-on experiences, and direct connections with employers,” Sauls said. “Investments like this are critical to developing the skilled workforce our community and industry partners will depend on for years to come.”
The program is an initiative of the Siemens Foundation. Its goal is to expand access to high-quality electrical training and create clear pathways to well-paying, in-demand electrical careers, meeting the nation’s growing electrification needs.
“Programs like this create real opportunities for students to step into careers that are critical to the future of our region,” said Lauren Wargo, Duke Energy district manager of government and community relations. “By supporting Wayne Community College’s electrical trades training, this investment helps build a skilled workforce that will power homes, businesses, and economic growth across Wayne County and beyond.”
