GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A Goldsboro man has been arrested and charged in connection with the overdose death of a local resident that occurred in late 2025.
According to the Goldsboro Police Department, officers responded to a reported overdose on Nov. 22, 2025, in the 1000 block of South Andrews Street. Emergency medical personnel treated the victim, identified as 35-year-old Tayvon James Hawkins of Goldsboro, before transporting him to UNC Health Wayne for additional care.
Despite lifesaving efforts by medical staff, Hawkins later died as a result of the overdose.
The Goldsboro Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hawkins’ death. During the course of that investigation, detectives identified 51-year-old Corey Tyon Winstead as the suspect.
Police obtained arrest warrants, and members of the department’s Special Enforcement Unit located and arrested Winstead in the 100 block of West Ash Street without incident.
Winstead has been charged with one count of Death by Distribution – Sale, a felony offense under North Carolina law.
Following his arrest, Winstead appeared before a Wayne County magistrate and was ordered held without bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for June 3, 2026.
