May 25, 2026, 77, La Grange – Billy Ray “Bill” Carter, 77, passed away at home on Monday, May 25, 2026 in the presence of his loving wife, Cindy. Bill was born in Wilson County to the late Robert Carter and Ollie Mae Shirley Carter on November 2, 1948. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Walston; brother, Bobby Carter; and his fishing partner and friend, Paul Smith.
Bill faithfully served his country in the United States Army, including an overseas deployment during the Vietnam War. Upon return and discharge from the Army, he went on to be employed as a driver for Patetown-Dixie Gas until his retirement.
In his free time, there was nothing that made him happier than being out on the water with a fishing pole in hand or out in the woods hunting. His yard was kept in pristine condition, and he enjoyed time in his outdoor kitchen where he could prepare and share meals with others.
Bill had a great love for his family and friends, and loved Jesus with his whole heart. His devotion to his family was evident in the care he exhibited for them.
A service of love and remembrance will be held by the graveside at Fairview Cemetery on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Reggie Parks officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Bill is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cynthia Joyce “Cindy” Suggs; daughter, Heather Ann Carter; grandchildren, Dillion, Landon, and Ally; sister, Shirley Webb; special nieces, Wanda and Trisha; and his fishing partner and friend, Glenn Rouse.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Wilbur and Linda Taylor and family, Olia Suggs, Jeffrey Wood, Ethan and Keri Wood; along with all who have taken care of Cindy and Bill and offered their prayers and support during this entire journey. May God bless each of you with the care and support that has been offered to them.
