May 13, 2026, 82, Goldsboro – Roy William Gurley, 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Roy was born in Wayne County on August 11, 1943, to the late Leland Gurley and Ruth Ingram Gurley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Maggie Smith and Rachel Lytton; and his brothers, Edward Gurley, Ervin Gurley, Jimmy Gurley, and Shade Gurley.
Roy was a hardworking man who spent many years working as a carpenter and mechanic, often for himself, but those who knew him best would simply describe him as a true jack of all trades. If something was broken, Roy could usually find a way to fix it. His hands were rarely idle, and his practical knowledge and determination were admired by all who knew him.
Roy found great joy in the outdoors. Whether deer hunting, raccoon hunting, casting a fishing line beside the water, or simply enjoying nature’s quiet moments, he was happiest outside. In later years, when he was no longer able to enjoy those activities as he once had, he found comfort in spending time at home watching television.
Above all, Roy was devoted to his family. He worked hard throughout his life to provide for those he loved, always doing whatever he could to care for their needs. His steady presence, strong work ethic, and love for his family will be deeply missed.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Roy’s life at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Barry Teague and Rev. Tim Stevens officiating. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
Roy is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, Barbara Hare Gurley; his children, Michelle Barwick (Chris) and Mark Gurley; his three grandchildren, Chelsea McKenzie (Russell), Kellie Harris (Austin), and Robbie Harris (Keri); his eight great-grandchildren, Farrah Mondale, Julie Mondale, Reed McKinsey, Arizona McKinsey, Kayleigh Jacobs, Adrianna Jacobs, Clara Jacobs, and Wyatt Harris; his brothers, Raeford Gurley (Helen) and Arthur Gurley; and his sister, Lynette Glance (Leonard).
