March 22, 2026, 89, Pikeville – Wilba Lee Witherington, 89, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at The Indigo in Pikeville.
Wilba was born in Duplin County on July 30, 1936, to the late Ralph and Hettie Witherington. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hilda Askew Witherington, and his son, Steve Witherington.
Wilba dedicated more than 30 years of his life to landscaping and was the proud owner and operator of Kempsville Landscaping in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A self-made man, he was known for his intelligence, strong work ethic, and ability to successfully manage his business. He took great pride in his work and the life he built for himself and his family.
He had a deep love for animals and would do all he could to help those in need. His cat, Charlie, was a constant and cherished companion. Wilba also enjoyed gardening and found great joy in sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and family.
Wilba and his wife, Hilda, especially loved bringing family and friends together in their home, where many gathered to enjoy good food and fellowship. Together, they also shared a love of travel, exploring new places across the United States and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors, often through camping adventures.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 29, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Wilba’s life at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Wilba is survived by his daughter, Kathy Ann Witherington and grand cat, Shadow; his son, Danny Witherington and wife, Terry; and his beloved cat, Charlie. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amy, Nikkie, Holly, Stephanie, Danielle, and Danny, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Zoey, Lucy, Deanna, Tashianna, Vivianna, Lamont, Nathan, Trey, Bryce, and Kaylin; and the mother of Steve’s children, Carmen.
In addition, he is survived by his brother, Dallas Witherington, and wife, Becky; his sister-in-law, Charlotte Askew; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members whom he loved dearly.
