February 25, 2026, 95, Goldsboro – Delores Marie Montgomery, born on October 20, 1930, in New Bern, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, at Eagle’s Pointe in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph Clinton Gorham and Mary Bryan. Delores was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph N. Powers; her second husband, Robert E. Montgomery; her siblings Sarah Croom, Thomas Gorham, and Harriet Mallison; and her grandson, Joseph Powers.
Delores graduated from West Street High School in New Bern, North Carolina. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from North Carolina Central University in Durham, with a minor in Health Education, Physical Handicap, and Rehabilitation, emphasizing work with veterans.
A dedicated educator for more than 40 years, Delores taught youth across multiple states, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Illinois, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
Delores was known for her warm hospitality and love of entertaining. She was an active member of several community organizations, including the Women of Christ-like Character. A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she was recognized for her mentorship of young women in her chapter. Her commitment to service extended to volunteering with the March of Dimes, Red Cross Disaster Relief, and Interchurch Outreach, where she served as a foster parent for children ages 6–15. Delores was a faithful attendee of the Lord’s Table in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
She is survived by her loving and devoted son, Jerome Powers, and his wife, Brenda Powers; one sister, Dorinda Blocker of Maryland; three grandchildren: Nanette Rupke, Joshua Powers, and Joy Mungro-Holman; four great-grandchildren: Madison McLaughlin, Nevaeh McLaughlin, DeAsia Holman, and Samauri Mungro; five bonus children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Delores lived a full life marked by education, service, faith, and family. Her legacy of kindness, mentorship, and community involvement will continue to inspire all who knew her.
