Kathy is survived by her daughters, Valerie Tew (Jason) and Amanda McNeil (Derrick); grandchildren, Bailie Tew, Lanie Tew, Derrick McNeil, Jr. and Camden McNeil; brother, Stan Russell (Gail); and nephew, Carl Russell (Lara) and their daughter, Carly.
Kathy dedicated many years of her professional life to administrative roles with the State of North Carolina. Her last employment adventure before retiring was with the Smithfield Police Department. She loved to take care of people, especially “her boys” at the police department. Kathy was known for her loyalty and spirited tenacity, earning the respect and appreciation of colleagues throughout her career.
A devoted member of St. Paul Methodist Church, Kathy was actively involved in church life and deeply committed to her faith. She found great joy in serving others and sharing her God-given talents, most famously through her delicious cheese biscuits, which became a cherished tradition and a fond memory for many.
Kathy had a deep love for home and simple pleasures. In addition to being a great cook, she especially enjoyed watching North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball, cheering faithfully through every season. She delighted in snowy days, often practicing old wives tales like spoons-in-the-freezer and pajamas-inside-out in hopes of a big snow.
Perhaps most memorable was Kathy’s extraordinary ability to make others smile and laugh. She possessed a rare gift for lifting spirits, spreading joy, and making everyone feel welcome and valued. Her humor and spice for life touched countless lives and will be remembered always.
Kathy’s life was one of service, love, and laughter. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
