February 23, 2026, 99, Kenly – Dorothy Pittman Barnes, 99, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026. Born on April 14, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Pittman and Elsie Stancil Pittman.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “J.E.” Barnes, Sr.; son, Joseph “Eddie” Barnes, Jr.; grandson, Brad Watson; and siblings, Harold Pittman, Wayne Pittman, Ida Cox, Anna Lee Kucyk, Marjorie Cooper, Becky Pittman, Jessie Sisk, and Carlton Pittman.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Joy Watson (Danny),Jan Brinchek (Steve), and Annette Creech (Danny); grandchildren, Terri Schmidt (Anthony), Elizabeth Hummel (Alex), Brandi Sauer (Tobi), Robyn White (Matthew), Shannon Bruton (Gray), Casey Creech (Kaitlyn); great-grandchildren, Keegan, Madilyn, Liza, Grace, Trent, Claire, Harper, and Hayden; and brothers, Andy Pittman (Pat) and Jimmy (Janice) Pittman. Dorothy is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She loved all her family very much.
Dorothy was the heart of her family and loved them more than anything in this world. She devoted her life to caring for them, always placing their needs before her own. Whether through quiet support, wise advice, or simply being present, Dorothy was a constant source of strength, comfort, and unconditional love. Her family knew they could always count on her, and her love will continue to guide them in the days ahead.
Dorothy’s faith was the foundation of her life. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a lifelong member of Kenly Free Will Baptist Church. She faithfully served in the Ladies Auxiliary and treasured the fellowship of her church family.
For 53 years, Dorothy worked as a hairdresser, forming meaningful friendships with her clients and taking pride in serving others. She also enjoyed the companionship and laughter shared with friends as a member of the Canasta Club.
Dorothy will be remembered for her deep devotion to family, her steadfast faith, and the quiet grace with which she lived her life.
A graveside service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Kenly Cemetery with Pastor Aubrey Williamson presiding. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
