February 6, 2026, 84, Goldsboro – Maria Teresa Diaz Butner, age 84, passed away on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Tomas Diaz and Elisa Felix Alejandro and mother of the late Brian Keith Stewart and Elizabeth Marie Stewart. Maria was a nurse for over 40 years and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
A service to celebrate her life is tentatively scheduled to be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Maria is survived by her husband, Hank Butner; her children, Wayne Stewart and his wife, Andria, Kevin Stewart and his wife, Patricia, and Kathy Stewart Rose; her twelve grandchildren, Emily Stewart Taylor and her wife, Brooke, Amber Rich, Stephen Rich and his wife, Rae, Chandler Stewart, Paula Radford, Jamie Carmack and her husband, Buddy, Sydney Christensen and her husband, Bradley, Willow Stewart, James Valley, Carter Valley, Ruby Valley and Trinity Rose; and her great grandchildren, Damien Carmack, Gabriel Carmack, Julien Carmack and Ava Kate.
