January 23, 2026, 73, Goldsboro – Chester Ray Howell, 73, affectionately known as “Rayye,” passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026, at UNC Health in Chapel Hill. Rayye was born in Wayne County on October 25, 1952, to the late Chester Lee Howell and Gladys Ophelia Hollowell Howell.
Rayye proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he dedicated many years to public service, working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 15 years before retiring.
He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Jackie Howell; his children, Shannon Howell, Christopher Howell, and Monica Elizabeth Howell; along with other family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 2, 2026, from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Nahunta Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rayye’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
