UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The University of Mount Olive men’s volleyball team opened the 2026 season with a spirited performance Friday night, earning a set victory and challenging No. 13 Penn State before falling 3–1 (25–20, 25–18, 20–25, 25–18) at Rec Hall.
After dropping the opening two sets, the Trojans showed their resilience in the third frame, delivering their most complete stretch of the match. Mount Olive hit an impressive .391 in the set, taking control early and maintaining the momentum to close out a 25–20 win and pull within one set of the nationally ranked Nittany Lions.
Mount Olive was led offensively by Maksim Kazanoz, while Matthew Ekberg added 13 kills and paced the team defensively with five blocks. Jackson Lahey directed the attack with 33 assists, effectively distributing the ball and keeping Penn State’s defense off balance throughout the contest.
Penn State responded in the fourth set by building an early lead. The Trojans mounted several rallies to stay within striking distance, but the hosts ultimately closed out the match to secure the victory.
Mount Olive will remain on the road as the Trojans prepare for their next matchup against McKendree on Friday, Jan. 17, in Charleston, W.Va., as part of the UC Invitational hosted by the University of Charleston.
