December 19, 2025, 86, Goldsboro – Mary Ellen Davis Kearney, 86, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025. She was born on July 10, 1939, in Wayne County, North Carolina, to the late Emmette Davis and Minnie Davis.
Mary Ellen devoted more than 30 years of her life to education, touching countless young lives as a dedicated and compassionate teacher. She truly loved her students and believed deeply in the power of learning, encouragement, and kindness. Teaching was not just her profession—it was her calling.
A woman of strong faith and service, Mary Ellen was an active member of the Gospel Gems singing group and the Church Ladies Auxiliary, where she shared her voice, time, and generous spirit. She found joy in simple pleasures, especially working in her yard, being outdoors, and cutting grass—activities that brought her peace and satisfaction. Above all, she cherished her family and treasured every moment spent with them.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by the love of her life of more than 50 years, James Milton Kearney; her second husband, J.D. Hines; her sisters, Shirley Gardner and Nora Kearney; and her brothers, E.C. Davis and Edgar Davis.
She is survived by her loving children: daughter Rebecca Owens and husband Cliff; sons Tim Kearney and Eddie Kearney and wife Lori. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren: Parker Owens, Hadley Owens, Gage Kearney, Dylan Kearney and wife Elouise, Jaden Kearney, Kelsey Stewart and husband Brian, and Zackary Kearney. She was blessed with great-grandchildren Catherine Kearney, Christian Stewart, Easton Kearney, and Weston Kearney.
She is also survived by her brother Randall Davis and wife, Sherry, along with several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Mary Ellen will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her dedication to teaching, her love of the outdoors, and the deep love she had for her family. Her life was one of service, strength, and grace, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A service to celebrate her life will take place Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at 12 PM in the Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marvin Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery, Snow Hill NC. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at 11 AM.
