December 18, 2025, 79, Goldsboro – Jonafen Lee “Ricky” Ward, 79, passed away at Kitty Askins Hospice Center on Thursday, December 18, 2025. Born in Wilson County on August 11, 1946, he was the son of the late Lessie Mae Ward.
In addition to his mother, Ricky was preceded in death by his siblings, Hope Willoughby and Stanley Witherington.
Ricky is survived by his wife, Frances Diane Jernigan Ward; children, Michael J. Ward and wife, Karen, Tabitha Christy Baxley, and Susan Brewcznski and husband Allen; grandchildren, Blake Parker and wife, Katherine, Dalton Ward and wife, Bryanah, Derek Ward, and Jeanelle Ward; sister, Faith Ward; and blended-family, David Milton Ribel, Authur Allen Ribel, Marcie Ginsberg and husband, Eric, Emma Nichole Wolff, Erin Patrick Wolff, Kylie Frances Ribel, and David Robert Ribel.
Ricky honorably served his country in the United States Army for 20 years. He was a proud Vietnam War veteran, a chapter of his life that he carried with deep pride and humility. His service reflected his strong sense of duty, patriotism, and commitment to others.
Ricky was also a dedicated Mason, holding dear the principles of brotherhood, charity, and integrity. His involvement in the Masonic Lodge was a meaningful part of his life, and he was respected by his fellow brothers for his loyalty and character.
Ricky found peace on hiking trails and while exploring new places, always drawn to nature and the sense of freedom it offered. A thoughtful soul, he loved to read and write, often encompassing himself in stories and ideas that inspired his creativity.
Music and dancing were especially close to his heart. Dancing was one of his greatest joys, a way he expressed happiness and connection beyond words. Ricky also had a profound love for animals, particularly dogs, whose loyalty and companionship brought him comfort and happiness.
Those who knew Ricky will remember his gentle spirit, adventurous heart, and the warmth he brought into everyday moments. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
A service to celebrate Ricky’s life will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 12 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home with Masonic Rites being held in the chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Inurnment services with military honors will be held at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at 2 p.m.
