Ferrum, VA — The University of Mount Olive softball team extended its winning streak to five games after sweeping a doubleheader against Ferrum College, continuing a strong stretch that has seen the Trojans win seven of their last 10 contests.
With the sweep, Mount Olive improves to 20-16 overall and 12-6 in conference play. The Trojans will return home Saturday to face UNC Pembroke in a doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
Game One: Steen Dominates in 5–2 Victory
Mount Olive set the tone early in game one, applying pressure and forcing Ferrum to defend before breaking through in the third inning. Kynley Brewer helped spark the rally alongside McKenzie Millard, who continues to reach base consistently. Emma King followed with another quality at-bat to load the bases.
Allison Barbour opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and after an error extended the inning, Kaylee Cox delivered a clutch two-RBI single to give Mount Olive a 3–0 lead.
The Trojans added two more runs in the sixth inning. Millard drove in a run on a groundout, and King followed with an RBI single to extend the lead.
In the circle, Alex Steen delivered a complete-game performance, allowing just four hits and no earned runs. Steen struck out 10 batters, worked through a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, and improved to 10–5 on the season with 113 strikeouts. Ferrum managed two unearned runs late, but Mount Olive secured the 5–2 victory.
Game Two: Trojans Explode for 9–0 Shutout
Game two remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when Mount Olive’s offense erupted. After Brewer and Millard advanced runners with bunts, King recorded her team-leading 56th hit with an RBI single to ignite the scoring.
Barbour followed with a double that drove in two runs, while Elizabeth Thome added two more RBIs with a well-placed bunt. Cox contributed another RBI as Mount Olive scored six runs in the inning.
Samantha Taylor added a solo home run in the fifth inning — her 10th of the season — highlighting her .767 slugging percentage.
Mount Olive added insurance runs in the seventh as King delivered another RBI single and Barbour added a sacrifice fly, pushing the final score to 9–0.
In the circle, Emma Myatt delivered a dominant two-hit shutout. Myatt allowed just three walks and recorded 15 ground ball outs while improving to 8–6 on the season. Her performance lowered her ERA to 3.07.
The Trojans showcased a balanced effort throughout the doubleheader, combining offensive production with strong pitching and defense to secure the sweep.
